Star Trek Beyond – Press Conference

Star Trek Beyond Crew Concregate at a Press Conference in Dubai ahead of Filming in the Emirate

The renowned Star Trek Beyond crew gathered on 30 September 2015 at the prominent Burj Al Arab Hotel, in one of the Emirate’s largest press conferences, ahead of its filming in Dubai.

The press conference, which was attended by more than 100 local and international media, included the film’s director and producer Justin Lin, executive producer Jeffrey Chernov, writers Douglas Jung & Simon Pegg and stars Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Idris Elba.

Dubai Film and TV Commission announced that Star Trek Beyond, the latest film in the globally renowned sci-fi franchise, will film scenes in Dubai for 13 days, starting from 1 October. They will be filming at the Sound Stages in Dubai Studio City as well as key indoor and outdoor locations, throughout the city.

Jamal Al Sharif, Chairman of Dubai Film and TV Commission and Managing Director of Dubai Studio City, commented: “Dubai’s diverse locations have truly set it apart as a global filming destination. During the scouting, the film crew was impressed by its diverse attractions and locations that include skyscrapers, beaches, desert and more. There are many factors about the Emirate that are truly unique and attractive to international productions, including the excellent connectivity and cutting-edge infrastructure, as well as the ease of filming.”

New Filming Permit Processing Time

The processing time for filming permits in the Emirate has been reduced to a minimum of three working days, effective 14 September 2015. This is a major step towards easing the filming process in Dubai, and further enhances the Emirate’s position as a leading production destination.

Jamal Al Sharif, Chairman of Dubai Film and TV Commission and Managing Director of Dubai Studio City, said: “We are always looking at ways we can enhance the filming process in Dubai, and ensure it is as efficient and cost-effective as possible. The growth in the Emirate’s film industry this year has been outstanding, with major Hollywood and Bollywood productions taking place in Dubai such as Star Trek, and with our new reduced permit time it will make it more easy and efficient to film in Dubai, which in turn will encourage even more productions to the Emirate over the coming years.”

New Locations Fees Structure

Earlier this year we announced details about our new locations fee restructure for filming in government and semi-government locations across Dubai. This is part of our mandate to reduce the cost of media production, and will enhance the filming process in Dubai by ensuring it is as efficient and cost-effective as possible. The new fees are a direct response to feedback from our business partners regarding the cost of filming in the Emirate, and processing fees have also been reduced from AED 800 to AED 500 for filming permits in Dubai. Cannes 2015

DFTC travelled to Cannes as part of the UAE pavilion, with the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC) and Twofour54, to promote the UAE’s thriving film and production industry.

As the UAE continues to attract a growing number of productions, Cannes 2015 provided an excellent platform for us to build awareness about the UAE’s growing production industry, world-class facilities and infrastructure, and unique choice of locations. In addition to building relationships with influential players in the global film industry, we unveiled also our 2015 Production Guide during the film festival.

CABSAT 2015

Dubai Film and TV Commission and Dubai Studio City sponsored a series of post-production workshops during CABSAT in March this year, where, for the first time in the region, certified instructors from the NABSHOW training wing gave advanced post-production training to media professionals. This year, students were also given the opportunity to take part in the 2-day workshops, and three media students were selected from AUD to take part.

This year’s CABSAT was bigger than ever before, bringing together industry professionals to discuss, debate, and showcase the latest technologies within the production, animation, photography and broadcasting sectors.

Children’s International Film Festival (CIFF)

DFTC was the strategic partner for the Children’s International Film Festival (CIFF), which opened in April under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Culture, Youth & Community Development in the UAE. CIFF’s second edition featured 120 films from 60 countries, 53 of which were made by school students in the UAE, and provided an ideal platform for young talent to showcase their creativity. The UAE achieved great success in the competition, with students from DPS Sharjah winning Best International Costume Design by a Child for Life, the Journey, and students from JESS Jumeirah winning Best International Production Design by a Child for Selfish Magic.
